SuperLAN PARTY!
See LANEvent for an implementation attempt of this.
This page is the development page for ideas for the joint TagSoc-Compsoc SuperLAN Party Event. For two years TagSoc has run a regular LAN Party event - called TagLAN - at the DotCafe (and on campus). We hire a room, bring our computers, and play from Friday 6pm to Monday 9am. However, space is limited, DotCafe's staff are, well, not all that great, the facilities are quite poor, ougoing internet is always a problem (despite being advertised as good) and the network equipment is usually terrible.
We want to organise the SuperLAN party ourselves. Both TagSoc and Compsoc have the skills, equipment and know-how to make a great LAN party, with many many people rather than the usually limited (15 or so) number.
'Venue'
We need to decide upon a venue...
- On-Campus (UKC) is preferred
- Needs to be away from living areas (we make a lot of noise...)
- Needs a good power infrastructure
- Need to be able to rent and use the venue overnight etc. from friday to monday.
- If possible, we'd like outgoing internet (really, at a minimum, we'd need outgoing HTTP for game patches, etc.)
So... Suggestions?!
Venue Suggestions
- UKC Small Sports Hall - could get cold overnight... May not be able to book overnight
- Darwin Missing Link - power problems, unlikely to be able to book overnight
- Darwin Function Hall next to reception - has its own kitchen, which will have a seperate power source that we can steal
Internet Provision
- If on campus, we may be able to either a) steal an SBS or PPC connection or b) ask the Computing Service /really/ nicely for an SBS/PPC connection or similar or c) use the so-called WiMAX service (but I'm not sure that even exists yet - yes it does (Daisuke)).
- If off campus, it could be very limited, or if we use a house or place with existing ADSL, very easy
